Wheeliepad (Double 2 telepresence robot)

Zarino Zappia edited this page Sep 27, 2024 · 2 revisions

DoES Liverpool has a resident telepresence robot, through which one visitor at a time can visit and move around the space, remotely, from somewhere else in the world.

The robot is named “Wheeliepad”, and is a Double 2 ("Double" is the company that makes it, and "Double 2" is the model number).

How to start the Wheeliepad

  • Ensure the Wheeliepad and iPad are fully charged, by plugging it in. The power input port is on the back side of Wheeliepad’s cylindrical base, between the two wheels, on the side opposite the "Double" logo. The light on the front of the Wheeliepad’s cylindrical base will glow Green when the Wheeliepad is charged.
  • Unplug the Wheeliepad from its power cable.
  • The Wheeliepad should start automatically, as soon as it’s unplugged. But if it doesn’t, you can start it manually by pressing the small power button to the left of the charging port, on the back of its cylindrical base. The light on the front of the Wheeliepad’s cylindrical base will glow Blue when the Wheeliepad is switched on.
    • If you need to turn the iPad on, hold down its lock/power button, on the bottom left underside corner of the case.
    • If you need to log into the iPad, the passcode is bubblino.
  • Ensure the iPad is connected to the Double 2 via Bluetooth:
    • Open Settings > Bluetooth.
      • If you need to find the Settings icon, press the iPad’s "Home" button (top centre, where you’d expect the iPad’s camera to be) then look in the dock at the bottom of the iPad’s homescreen
    • Enable Bluetooth.
    • Connect to the "Double" device in the "My Devices" list
    • Press "Allow" when a dialog box pops up asking about the Double app wanting to connect to the Double 2 device
  • Open the Double app on the iPad (this should happen automatically, if you pressed "Allow" in the previous step)
    • If you need to find the Double app, press the iPad’s "Home" button (top centre, where you’d expect the iPad’s camera to be) then look in the dock at the bottom of the iPad’s homescreen
    • If you need to sign in to the Wheeliepad’s Double account, ask an organiser at the space for the username and password (they are in the DoES Organiser wiki).
  • Check for a green circle in the top left corner of the Double app screen – this green circle means the Double device is connected to the iPad. If the circle is red, the Bluetooth connection is not established. Try turning the iPad’s Bluetooth on and off again, and re-connecting, via the iPad’s Settings (see above).
  • Check the Wheeliepad’s internet connection, by tapping the green circle in the top left corner of the Double app screen. It will take a minute to do some checks, and then show you the internet connection speed and latency. If it fails, then try re-connecting to the Wifi, via the iPad’s Settings.
  • You can dismiss the warning about Guided Access Mode not being enabled. Or just leave it in place.

How to invite a remote visitor

  • Open the Double app, from the dock at the bottom of the iPad homescreen. (If you need to get to the homescreen, the iPad’s "Home" button is top centre, above its screen, where you’d expect its camera to be.)
  • Log in, if necessary (see above).
  • Press the big circular "User" icon, in the bottom left corner of the Double app screen (it’s a silhouette of a person).
  • Create a visitor pass and email it to the person you want to invite.

Sometimes, when a remote visitor tries to start a session on the Wheeliepad, their connection immediately cuts out, and the Wheeliepad’s screen shows a large red "Not connected to Bluetooth" warning. We assume this is a bug in the Double app. If this happens, switch to the iPad Settings, disable Bluetooth, re-enable Bluetooth, and then re-connect to the Double device (see above).
