About

This machine is used to produce large scale prints, up to 42" in width, using rolls of paper.

It currently doesn't have a network card, so you'll need a printer cable to connect it to your laptop.

How it works

The printer doesn't currently have a network card, so you'll need a plug in with the USB cable to connect it to your laptop.

Once connected and set up, you should be able to use the printer in the same way as any other. If you're using the roll of paper, check the Paper Menu -> Page Format menu on the printer to check it's set to a useful size (It often seems to set itself to A3 or A4 and then stops printing after 30cm or so). Remember to pay for ink and paper used.

The printer will not automatically cut off your print when it has finished. You need to press the button with a cut sheet icon below the orange X button to cut off your print. There is a large guillotene currently left of Queen Victoria.

Set up: Ubuntu

If using Ubuntu Linux, after connecting, open the Printers dialog and the printer should show up as HP_Designjet_510_42in_Printer_

Click on the Settings symbol to the right, select "Printer Details" then "Select from Drivers Database". Choose "HP DesignJet 500 Foomatic/cdnj500 (recommended)" or the "HP DesignJet 500ps Foomatic dnj650c (recommended)" (not one of the DeskJet options, which are easy to find by accident) from the list and save. There doesn't seem to be a specific 510 driver, but this one works, apart from not automatically cutting the paper roll once the print has finished (there is a button on the right of the printer that allows you to do this manually). @amcewen hasn't worked out whether either of those support the paper cutter, so if you do discover anything about that, update this.

Set up: Windows

Download a driver from HP.

Mike reports that once he had run the download, he had to unzip it, then right click on setup.inf. Arthur right clicked on dsgj510.inf and selected install. When setting up on Jackie’s Windows laptop, Zarino had to enable ISO (EU) paper sizes (A0, A1, etc) in the Windows printer settings screen – it defaulted to just ANSI (US) paper sizes.

Set up: macOS

Download the latest HP driver pack from Apple: https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1888?locale=en_US (the page says “Not compatible with macOS v12 and newer” but that’s not true – it worked fine for @zarino on macOS 12.3.1 in July 2022).

Open the disk image and run the installer, as you normally would.

Go to System Preferences (or Settings, in macOS 12.4), then Printers & Scanners. Click the "+" icon to add the new printer. Ensure the printer is connected to a USB port on your Mac. When you set up the printer, it should automatically select the correct printer driver ("HP Designjet 510 42in Printer (color)") – if it says something like "Generic PCL", then you’re not using the correct drivers, and things like colour printing won’t work.

Pricing

Current prices based on the size of print (down the page) and the area covered in ink (across the page). Most of the cost is for ink, so it should be affordable to print sewing patterns etc. which cover a lot of paper but don't use much ink:
