20170508 Ontology Change Improvement Call

Date: May 08, 2017

Attendees: Brian Lowe, Marijane White, Damaris Murry, DJ Lee

Agenda: Review Todos from last two meetings, share news

Marijane: Hi everyone! Let's review last meeting's todos.

I talked to Chris Mungall about ROBOT. A member of his team may be able to join our next call on the 22nd to talk to us about how we might use the tool. He asked for documentation about the current eagle-i extraction process so I am trying to track that down for him. I will send out an email to vivo-tech and openrif-dev once attendance is confirmed.

I did not get a definitions page written up (apologies, Christian, if you are reading this!) I got stymied once I visited the VIVO wiki, I saw some of the stuff we discussed defining is already described at the page, and I got stuck figuring out exactly where everything should go. So this is still on my todo list.

Not sure what the status is on Javed's comparison work.

Have not created page to define changing workflows, that seems ok because I'm not sure we're ready for it yet.

Figuring out how to build the eagle-i application is still on my todo list, I actually need to figure this out for another project I'm working on.

News! I talked with Dave Eichmann from the University of Iowa last week and mentioned what we're working on here. The subject of analyzing ontology usage came up, and he reminded me that he has all of the VIVO triples that are public, because he scrapes them from VIVO instances by querying for entities and then downloading the RDF for each one. This means he not only has all public VIVO data, he also has information about local extensions. He also has analysis tools that can show us what ontology sites are actually using (I guess he presented this to the VIVO community about four years ago? Before I got involved with VIVO.) He needs to refresh his data, once he does that he can run his analysis tools and he will share it with us. Possibly by our next meeting.

That is all I have, does anyone else have anything they'd like to share?

DJ: Was mostly listening last time, working on profiles in our VIVO system. Has not looked at domain definition, but will.

Damaris: I know you had mentioned working on the wiki page, which page is that? Can you show us?

Marijane: Yes! There are several.

This is where I take notes, at the GitHub wiki for the vivo-isf-ontology repo: https://github.com/openrif/vivo-isf-ontology/wiki I need to do some organization work here, I want to create a page where all the call logs/notes are listed as well as the todos we've talked about in the last two calls.

The main VIVO wiki is at: https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/VIVO The current VIVO Technical Documentation is at: https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/VIVODOC19x/VIVO+1.9.x+Documentation Which has an ontology reference section at: https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/VIVODOC19x/Ontology+Reference

The page of definitions and the workflow page should fit somewhere in among the last three links, I'm not sure where yet.

Damaris: Thank you. So OpenRIF is separate from VIVO?

Marijane: Yes, OpenRIF is a sort of umbrella community that manages the ontology separate from the software. I am under the impression it was created after the eagle-i ontology was merged with the VIVO ontology to create the ISF.

Brian: Unfortunately missed last call, getting caught up, thank you for the comprehensive update.

Marijane: That is all I have. Thank you for calling in, everyone!

The VIVO-ISF ontology is an information standard for representing scholarly work.
