- Most generic term, and which must be applicable to bones of the human body.
- In many languages, the generic term will be widely applicable to the bones of animals, too. Avoid, however, terms specific to certain animals or fish, e.g. French arête (fishbone).
- Avoid terms specific to ‘bone’ as a substance, e.g. of which things can be made. The term must be applicable to an actual bone, e.g. in a skeleton.
- Avoid any more limited terms that are specific only to certain types of bone (e.g. antlers), or to certain uses (e.g. for food), and so on.
