Personas

Dan. Dan is a current 3rd year student at the University of melbourne. He studies computing systems and has amassed a number of portfolio pieces to show off. He would like a website formatted for showing off all of these, and he knows in addition to having a persona site it can help his employment to have a dedicated portfolio page that condenses his portfolio. Most of his portfolio work is on his github, so he would like to be able to link to that. He also has a number of papers written on machine learning that he would like to showcase to employers, so he would like to have these on the profile. Finally he has a hobby of car photography, and thinks displaying personal interests on his portfolio page shows him to be a more interesting person. He would like to have this available as part of, though not the key part, of his profile.

Emma. Emma is a professional wedding photographer. She needs potential clients to be able to see her past work, as clients require this before hiring. She has previously hosted work on a website made on a template site creator, but doesn’t want to pay fees anymore, and is fed up with having her pictures taken and used without her permission, her previous site host didn’t allow her to do anything to prevent this.

Spectator Anne is a professor at the University of Australia. She teaches a course in Visual Arts. As part of this course students are required to present a series of photographs that tell a story about their family. Students are allowed to present these in any way they desire, but they must be available online for Anne to see. Anne has more than 300 students in her course. Anne uses her laptop and iPad when viewing her students’ work.

Matthew is a recruiter at Analytics Computing and Business (ACAB). As part of his job he needs to review job applications. Matthew has to view hundreds of applications per week, and although he appreciates the insight applicants’ self-created portfolio pages gives, the first part of his search involves judging based on credentials and experience, something not easily findable on all these sites. Above all else Matthew would like to know the most he can about an applicant as quickly as possible, so he knows he isn’t dismissing or admitting applicants without knowing their full background.

Professional/Student:

  • As a job seeking student I want to be able to showcase myself and my experience on an aesthetic, user friendly and simple website so that prospective employers and fellow students can view my skills and get in touch about relevant opportunities.

Employer:

  • As an employer I want to be able to view prospective employees profiles and gain knowledge into their background so that I can hire the correct person for a job.
  • Matthew is a recruiter at Analytics Computing and Business (ACAB). As part of his job he needs to review job applications. One applicant has emailed him a link to their EpicPortfolio page. Matthew uses the link to find out information about work the applicant has done that they consider relevant to the application, as well as previous experience in the industry. Links to webpages the applicant has created are placed with descriptions as to the relevance of the work.

Colleague/Spectator:

  • As a fellow student I want to be able to view my colleagues portfolio and to endorse certain skills so that future employees can be assured of the claims.
  • Spectator Anne is a professor at the University of Australia. She teaches a course in Visual Arts. As part of this course students are required to present a series of photographs that tell a story about their family. Students are allowed to present these in any way they desire, but they must be available online for Anne to see. A students has emailed her a link their EpicPortfolio page, Anne opens this from her computer in her browser. The link is clearly distinguishable as relating to the student through the URL, and Anne clicks through with confidence. As Anne has more than 300 students in her course, she has requested that students’s work not require signing up to any services to view them. EpicPortfolio meets this criteria. She is able to view the photos the student has provided, alongside contextual descriptions of the media. To ensure students do not change their uploaded work later, Anne likes to download the photos the first time she views them, saving them in a folder for each student, EpicPortfolio allows her to do this.
