Why?
----
One of the things that makes me happiest is building small tools that I use every day. This seems to be the case even when I'm the _only_ one that uses them! Every time those characters jolt forth, invoking something from the void that hadn't existed before, I feel a twinge of satisfaction.

For myself, the most effective way I've found to accomplish this comes in the form of small bash scripts, composed in traditional unix fashion. Every time I work on one of these scripts, I can feel more of the bash surface area sticking in my mind, and my proficiency in scripting this way improves. This has had a noticable side effect of improving my abilities in everyday shell-scripting tasks.

Keeping things small can sometimes be a satisfying challenge. With `nx`, the result of following this motivation has been a program that fits onto a single 13" MacBook Pro screen, at 13pt font size, without compromising on the desired featureset:
