  1. Work Item: Multi-cloud whitepaper

Scope: Multi-cloud deployments are increasingly important, and represent an area where CDMI can provide significant value, especially for organizations that are mandating that their applications must run across multiple clouds without cloud vendor lock-in.

It would be useful for these organizations for us to demonstrate how CDMI provides an abstraction layer for cloud storage management, ideally with concrete examples of how CDMI maps to the big three cloud vendors.

The structure of this whitepaper would be as follows:

  • Why use multiple clouds?
  • Barriers to using multiple clouds
  • CDMI for multi-cloud abstraction
  • CDMI for multi-cloud mobility

For the last topic, we can talk about how to store data to multiple clouds, as well as being able to move data between clouds. This can be controlled by data system metadata.

Draft text:

Why use multiple clouds?

Risk reduction

  • Avoid lock-in
  • Avoid single points of failure
  • Political, regulatory and compliance restrictions

Cost reduction

  • Operational cost reduction
  • Exit cost reduction
  • Running work in parallel across clouds

Access to features/performance

  • Access to cloud-specific features
  • Latency reduction
  • Throughput increase (parallelism

Barriers to using multiple clouds

  • Inconsistent data management
  • Different APIs
  • Different feature sets
  • Egress fees
  • Difficulty in using existing software across multiple clouds
  • Complexity of creating/updating software to use multiple clouds
  • Constantly changing services and functionality

CDMI for multi-cloud abstraction

  • Provides a consistent model for cloud data management
  • Provides a consistent API for cloud data management
  • Provides consistent data services across clouds
  • Enables policy-driven data services

CDMI for multi-cloud mobility

  • Enables application transparent data placement
  • Enables application transparent data access
  • Enables application transparent data movement

Next steps is to move this outline into .md files in a new repository. Recommend SNIA/CDMI-whitepapers
