In the context of performance assessment a task is a specific stimulus/response paradigm, where the stimulus is a problem to be solved, and the quality of the problem solution by the candidate is the response. Tasks represent a comprehensive set of problems exemplary for the overall competence to be evaluated. Problems can range from simple paper-and-pencil paragraphs to complex physical and social simulations.
The response is expressed as a single numeric score, or a fixed number of numeric subscores.
