Agenda

Notes

  • The team discussed the WMDR Codes and I-Adopt mapping spreadsheet (read-only link)
    • It would be good to make sure we can track the changes in the spreadsheet (more effective than comments)
    • It was noted that this could have a really big impact if this impacts the URIs. Most of the "notations" will not change but the combination of multiple tables will change the URIs. E.g. //codes.wmo.int/wmdr/ObservedVariableAtmosphere/12057 could become //codes.wmo.int/wmdr2/ObservedVariable/12057.
  • (John) question on the WMDR code 'bathymetry', but if we change it to be more "correct" (e.g. 'Depth of the ocean') then we lose the legacy name of the subject.
  • (Joerg) we have a mix of species and properties and it's not uniformly applied in WMDR
  • (Gao) NASA is launching a similar effort in esdwg; it would be useful to be backwards compatible with notations;
  • (Anna) how does this differ/relate to ontologies? (Joerg) I-Adopt is an ontology but more manageable
  • (John) ..(?)...
  • (Anna) Would you have the same notation for "Bathymetry (13)" for oceans and lakes? (Joerg) that's not the idea, there would be two different notations, the specificity is important; note that the context is not currently required by I-Adopt (Gao) I-Adopt is a concept that is being interpreted
  • (Anna) Q about implementation in the codes registry (Joerg) It would be great if the codes registry can generate the name from the elements/items associated with it. The WMDR2 UML model shows the "observedVariable" with other "classes" for the I-Adopt items. In the end, one phrase associated with the observed thing is needed;
  • (John) Will the constraint in "18, Atmospheric Density" become part of the name? (Joerg) it could be very useful for users in a UI to have it upfront and clear;

Actions

  • Anna add undiscussed issues from 17 August to next meeting's agenda
  • Gao will look at the atmospheric variables in the spreadsheet
  • John will look at variables that he's familiar with
