# Introduction
In a previous paper [@Goth2023] we have defined the core competencies and responsibilities of a Research Software Engineer (RSE).

* like in all aspects of modern life digital skills are required in all forms of research
* where are RSEs employed?
* traditional subjects computational physics such as weather forecasting, engineering, material science
* data acquisition systems from satellites to IoT sensors
* machine learning medical sciences
* visual/performing arts
* large variety of RSEs, refer to RSE specialisations in [@Goth2023]
* by definition research is innovative and ready-made digital solutions often do not exist. researchers need to develop their own tools
* as digitisation increases the need for RSE skills will only increase
* therefore all researchers need to be exposed to some RSE skills
* universities need to facilitate training RSEs
