Stress Tests

Stopa Monitor was placed in Male Karpaty mountains, near Zochova Chata in January 2014. The device was set to capture and upload data each 2 hours.
- Raspberry Pi board uptime revealed the OS never rebooted (34 days uptime).
- Lowest outer temperature measured:
-10.7 C
- Highest outer temperature measured:
+6.12 C
- Inner thermometer was not installed
The device itself was running properly until end of the test. The only drawback was the GPRS modem, which was Huawei E193 without antenna. The GPRS signal strenght was between -85 to -95 dB, which is too weak signal for reliable data transmission without antenna. Only cca 20% of the snapshots has arrived to the server.
Mounting the Stopa Monitor:
- Running from 2013/08/14 to 2013/09/27
- Snapshot every 2 hours
- Detailed stats here
- max outer temperature: 40 C
- max inner temperature (inside Stopa Monitor box): 60 C
Test conditions:
- Stopa Monitor was put into kitchen freezer for several days
- occasionally the Stopa Monitor was put from freezer (-12C) to refrigerator (+8C), then from refrigerator to room (+22C) and then back to freezer.
- Configuration: Raspberry Pi model A, 3G modem Huawei E169, thermometer TEMPer1, camera Creative Live HD.
- Every 30 minutes Stopa Monitor took a snapshot (temperature + photo during daylight) and transmitted data to server.
What should evaluate this test:
- How the devices handle thermic stress - when the device is put from room to fridge or vice versa, thermal shock is +/- 30 C.
- Ability to trasmit data via 3G from places with downgraded signal.
- Quality of camera shots cannot be evaluated as there is no light in fridge, but we will at least know that the camera is operating.
- if any of the devices is missing, RPi will reboot (so that uptime is reset to zero).
Results:
- the test was running 113 hours
- all devices were working correctly (at USB level) all the time - RPi's uptime was never reset to zero (i.e., no reboot)
- much to my surprise, 3G modem was able to establish connection every time despite it was operating from freezer. Freezer is a metal box and I expected it should act like a Faraday cage. Possibly thanks to rubber sealing around the door and power cable to RPI, the 3G signal is strong enough inside the freezer.
- Thermometer TEMPer1 was periodically unable to capture data: every 17th measurement holds "unknown" temperature. TODO: update code to take another temperature measurement when the outcome from TEMPer1 is "unknown".
