Seems like someone forgot to remove it, it does not apply to anything.
Adobe documentation refers to the 2px padding as the gutter.
Flash Player does not render text over the gutter.
This test verifies how the gutter of a text field behaves.

Turns out we'll need to render the caret a bit differently, as it shouldn't be affected by the mask. |
