pypuller

this file is NOT up-to-date.

1. what is this

"pypuller" is a small python script that scans configured routers and pulls info from them. for each router it spawns a new process, and this process will connect to the router (using ssh or netconf over ssh) and (if the connection succeeds) pull info by sending commands, and then save the output of the commands into a local file. for every command it sends, a new thread will be started. the performance is good because of the concurrency in both process and thread level. in theory, the overall duration when pulling multiple routers with multiple commands, will be roughly the same as processing time of the slowest command returned from one of the routers.

2. how to run

the simplest way to run the script (and the most common usage) is just to enter the script’s name and hit return:

pings@PINGS-X240:~/pypuller$ ./pypuller

or using full path:

pings@PINGS-X240:~$ pypuller/pypuller

the script will:

  • search for a file named host-lists.txt for host lists

  • search for a file named cli-lists.txt for cli lists

  • skip any yaml file (config file) under same folder

  • scan the host lists and issue the command lists to each host

  • for each host in host-lists: spawn a new process to connect to the host

  • for each command(cli) in cli-lists: spawn a new thread, send the cli, collect the output and write to a dedicated log file.

  • the log files will be created under folder '~/pypuller_logs', which will be created in the beginning if it does not exist yet.

  • the result of the scan will be logged to a file named cli-lists.txt.result, under same folder of the script:

    • connected : script connected to the host and cli output is collected.

    • failed : script failed to connect to the host

  • a log file 'pypuller.log' will be generated under the same folder of the script. this can be used for debugging purpose

3. other usage

to pull one command "show version" from one Junos device

pings@PINGS-X240:~/pypuller$ ./pypuller.py -r "punter.ultralab.juniper.net" \
    -c "show version"

this will assume username 'labroot' and password 'lab123', use '-u/-p' argument to specify different login account:

pings@PINGS-X240:~/pypuller$ ./pypuller.py -r "punter.ultralab.juniper.net" \
    -c "show version" -u 'abc' -p '123'

the default protocol used is 'ssh', use '-P' to specify other options:

  • ssh (default)

  • netconf

  • smart

'-P "netconf"' will make the script start a netconf over ssh connection into the Junos device, using Junos pyez module.

'-P "smart"' option will start from netconf, then ssh if failed.

to pull multiple commands, from multliple devices:

   pings@PINGS-X240:~/pypuller$ ./pypuller.py \
-r "punter.ultralab.juniper.net" \
-r "seahawks-re0.ultralab.juniper.net" \
-c "show version" -c "show system uptime"

instead of specify each router and command from CLI (-r, -c), if files 'router-list.txt' or/and 'cli-lists.txt' exists in same folder, the script will read these files and generates the router and cli list respectively.

pings@PINGS-X240:~/pypuller$ cat cli-lists.txt | head
show version
show interface lo0 terse
show system uptime
......
pings@PINGS-X240:~/pypuller$ cat router-lists.txt | head
matrix-re0.ultralab.juniper.net
mango-re0.ultralab.juniper.net
bombay-re1.ultralab.juniper.net
......
pings@PINGS-X240:~/pypuller$ ./pypuller.py

by default, the script will check the number of CPU in the host, and use 3 times of this number as the default number of processes to be spawned or the number of hosts provided, whichever is smaller. argument '-n' can be used to change this number:

  • '5c': 5 times of CPU numbers. if the host has 2 CPUs, 10 processes will be spawned to process all hosts

  • 200: spawn 200 processes

  • 0: unlimited. for each host spawn a process

    pings@PINGS-X240:~pypuller$ ./pypuller.py -n "5c" -y NONE

if file 'pypuller.yaml' exists in same folder, use '-y' to read the configuration info from this file.

pings@PINGS-X240:~/pypuller$ ./pypuller.py -y

there are many other command line arguments to fine tune the running behavior. run 'pypuller -h' to get argument list.

8. yaml file: pypuller.yaml

this is where all parameters can be configured. it is useful if some routers have different attributes(access info, CLIes to pull, etc), so info regarding each of these routers can be configured seperately, each under an individual host entry.

9. configuration/parameters processing flow

CLI > config file > default

9.1. general options

CLI options > yaml > default

9.2. router parameters/attributes (-u, -p, hostname, …)

CLI options > yaml router specific > yaml general > default

9.3. router-list/cli-list:

CLI options (-r, -c) > yaml > router_file and cli_file
default value
CLI options: router-file/cli-file exists?
    yes: read from those files
    no: read from default files:
        ./router-file.txt
        ./cli-file.txt
CLI options: yaml file exists?
yes, or no, but default yaml file (pypuller.yaml) exists:
