This is a workaround recommended by @iliana & pulled from the omicron repo. I've either integrated this wrong (most likely) or the workaround isn't applicable to this particular issue? I'm on to trying stuff like inserting apt-get update to see if that fixes stuff.

adding an apt-get update after removing the MS mirror seems to have fixed things. That or or they fixed the mirror while I was messing around over here ... we may never know
