Widgets

Additional features, besides the ontology diagram editing ones, are provided in Eddy through its Widgets. Currently, Eddy is equipped with five widgets, which can be activated or deactivated from the View submenu of the Main Menu:

  • The Project Explorer
  • The Palette
  • The Info Widget
  • The Ontology Explorer
  • The Overview Widget

The Project Explorer

From the Project Explorer you can access the diagrams of your ontology, each of which will be displayed in a new tab of the Modeling Canvas.

The Palette

The Palette provides all the nodes and edges in the Graphol syntax, and you can use it to add elements to the currently active diagram through drag and drop or select-and-click.

The Info Widget

The Info widget shows you the properties of the currently selected node. If no node is selected, it instead gives some general information of the ontology: the ontology IRI and its version, and the number of Classes, Object Properties and Data Properties currently defined in the ontology.

In the Info widget, shown in the screenshot above for the case of an object property node, the properties of the selected node are separated between the IRI properties and the Node properties.

IRI properties include the IRI, simple name, and label of the entity and, in the case of an object or data property, its properties. Any change to these properties is reflected in all the nodes in the ontology that represent this IRI.

Node properties instead include the ID of the node, its identity, and its color. Changes to node properties are performed on, and limited to, the specific node. For example, changing the color of the node will modify the color of the node selected only, and will not affect other nodes representing the same IRI (if there are any).

The Ontology Explorer

Finally, the Ontology Explorer provides a tree-view structure of the IRIs of the ontology, each of which is rendered accordingly to the selection made in the Render by option of the View submenu.

Clicking on any IRI expands its node in the tree so you can see all the nodes in the diagrams of the ontology that represent it. Each node is identified by its ID and a colored icon which reflects the type of the node. The widget also provides a useful search field to filter the IRIs in the tree-view by showing only those matching the entered input.

The Overview Widget

The Overview widget gives you a bird's eye view of the currently selected diagram, so you can easily move from one area to the next by clicking on any area of the Overview.
