MuseData digital edition of Corelli, Opp. 1-6

This repository contains MuseData digital scores used to produce PDF files for Arcangelo Corelli's Opp. 1–6 found on the CCARH wikipage for Corelli.

The following table lists PDF files of the scores, links to the MuseData Page files used to generate the PDF files, MuseData files containing the symbolic digital scores used to create the Page files, and links to the MuseData scores in Verovio Humdrum Viewer, which is useful interactive visual display of the notation and basic MIDI playback.

Directories

op?/musedata

The op?/MuseData directories contain "stage-2" (notation-level) MuseData files for the Corelli works. One file contains all parts for a single movement (72 works containing 299 total movements), and often contains mchan files for preparing MIDI files as well as individual part files when there are also combined part file(s) for the graphical score.

Files in this directory can be converted to PostScript files with the muse2ps command-line utility, or processed inside of the dmuse environment.

Here is a basic example of converting a MuseData file into graphical notation. This example uses the muse2ps to automatically typeset the symbolic musical data in the MuseData file. Various options are available for controlling the automatic layout of the music on the page.

   cat op1/musedata/corelli-op1n01-01.msd | muse2ps =z16j \
      | ps2pdf -sPAPERSIZE=letter - - > corelli-op1n01-01.pdf

pages-score

The pages-score directory contains IFF (music page) files which are generated from the combined MuseData files. Each Page file contains all of the pages for one work (containing multiple movements). These files include additional manual typesetting beyond the automatic typesetting of the muse2ps program, using the Dmuse environment (muse2ps is a command-line version of several processing programs found in Dmuse).

The Page files can be converted into PostScript files with the muse2ps program by using the =p option to specify Page file input:

   cat op1/pages-score/corelli-op1n01.iff | muse2ps =p \
      | ps2pdf -sPAPERSIZE=letter - - > corelli-op1n01.pdf

Parts

Part IFF files are not yet available. Basic parts can be created by extracting a single part file from the concatenated parts in the musedata directory.

When a part is extracted for printing, you will have to change two lines in the header for the part. For example, change line 15 of the cello part from:

score: part 4 of 4

to:

score: part 1 of 1

Before sending it as input to muse2ps. The muse2ps program only prints scores, so the "parts" line underneath the "score" line in the file header is ignored (muse2ps does not contain the part-generating code from dmuse).

Also, loading the score into VHV (see links in the above table) will allow easy parts prepartion by movement. Add a line such as:

@@@filter: extract -k 1

To extract the bottom staff of the score, with each staff being successively higher numbers given to the -k option.
