Issue longhorn/longhorn#8744

What this PR does / why we need it:

The packages aren't updated frequently, so the content of the image layer usually remains unchanged.
To avoid unnecessary rebuilding of this layer, copy the longhorn-manager binaries after installing the packages.

Walkthrough

The changes in the Dockerfile involve modifications to the handling of the TARGETPLATFORM argument and the reintroduction of COPY commands for specific binaries, namely longhorn-manager, launch-manager, and nsmounter. The existing conditional checks for supported platforms remain unchanged, and the environment variable ARCH is set accordingly. Other commands related to package management and container startup instructions have not been altered.

Changes

File Change Summary
package/Dockerfile Modified handling of TARGETPLATFORM, reinstated COPY commands for specific binaries, and maintained existing command sequences for package management and container execution.

Assessment against linked issues

Objective Addressed Explanation
Improve build time for longhorn-manager (#8744) The changes do not address the build time issue directly.

21-22: Good addition, minor suggestion for consistency

This change is consistent with the optimization strategy, copying launch-manager and nsmounter after package installation to prevent unnecessary rebuilds. The location (/usr/local/sbin/) is appropriate for system binaries.

For consistency with the previous COPY command, consider specifying the architecture for these binaries as well, if they are architecture-specific. If they are not, please clarify this in a comment. For example:

# These binaries are architecture-independent
COPY package/launch-manager package/nsmounter /usr/local/sbin/

or

COPY package/launch-manager-${ARCH} package/nsmounter-${ARCH} /usr/local/sbin/

Line range hint 1-24: Effective optimization, consider further improvements

The changes in this Dockerfile effectively address the PR objective of reducing packaging time. By moving the COPY commands for binaries after package installation, we prevent unnecessary rebuilds of unchanged layers, which is particularly beneficial for the frequently updated longhorn-manager binary.

These optimizations will significantly reduce build times, especially in CI/CD pipelines where builds are frequent. The unchanged parts of the Dockerfile maintain the necessary setup for the container, ensuring that the optimizations don't compromise functionality.

To further optimize the build process, consider the following suggestions:

  1. Use multi-stage builds to separate the build environment from the runtime environment. This can significantly reduce the final image size.

  2. Implement caching strategies for package installations. For example, you could copy only the package list first, run the update and install, and then copy the rest of the files. This way, package installation layer will only be rebuilt if the package list changes.

  3. Consider using a smaller base image if possible, which could further reduce build and pull times.

Would you like assistance in implementing any of these further optimizations?

19-19: Excellent optimization for build process

This change aligns perfectly with the PR objective of reducing packaging time. By copying the longhorn-manager binary after package installation, we prevent unnecessary rebuilds of unchanged layers. The use of ${ARCH} ensures the correct binary is copied for the target platform (amd64 or arm64).
