The new shortcut Ctrl + w works as follows.

case 1

current expression:

object.foo
          ^

after Ctrl + w pressed:

object.
       ^

case 2

current expression:

object.foo.bar
          ^

after Ctrl + w pressed:

object..bar
       ^
