Stoicism is an ancient philosophy dating back over 2000 years ago. Their ideas can be summed up by one quote:

"Objective judgment, now at this very moment. Unselfish action, now at this very moment. Willing acceptance, now at this very moment— of all external events. That is all you need." — Marcus Aurelius

The Stoics are the most practical philosophers in the world, having little interest in things that are unactionable. Their main ideas revolve around the dichotomy of control and virtue.

For all intents and purposes, they were the ORIGINAL self-help gurus. That being said, this API contains quotes from Stoic practitioners as well (not just the philosophers).

##The 3 Most Famous Stoics

####Marcus Aurelius Marcus Aurelius was emperor of Rome and widely known as the "Philosopher King".

"Get busy with life's purpose, toss aside empty hopes, get active in your own rescue." — Marcus Aurelius

"Be tolerant with others and strict with yourself." — Marcus Aurelius

"The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way." — Marcus Aurelius

"If anyone can refute me— show me I’m making a mistake or looking at things from the wrong perspective— I'll gladly change. It's the truth I'm after, and the truth never harmed anyone." — Marcus Aurelius

"Because most of what we say and do is not essential. If you can eliminate it, you'll have more time and more tranquility. Ask yourself at every moment: Is this necessary?" — Marcus Aurelius

####Epictetus Epictetus was a slave from birth until the age of 30. It was at this point that he decided to dedicate his life to philosophy.

"You are hurt the moment you believe yourself to be." — Epictetus

"It isn’t the events themselves that disturb people, but only their judgements about them." — Epictetus

"We have two ears and one mouth so that we can listen twice as much as we speak." — Epictetus

"We should always be asking ourselves: Is this something that is, or is not, in my control?" — Epictetus

"When someone is properly grounded in life, they shouldn’t have to look outside themselves for approval." — Epictetus

#### Seneca

Seneca was a Roman senator, known for being one of the wealthiest Romans as well as Nero's tutor. Seneca's greatest failure was Nero, likely the most infamous Roman emperor.

"We suffer more in imagination than in reality." — Seneca

"Two elements must therefore be rooted out once for all, – the fear of future suffering, and the recollection of past suffering; since the latter no longer concerns me, and the former concerns me not yet." — Seneca

"How does it help... to make troubles heavier by bemoaning them?" — Seneca

"Putting things off is the biggest waste of life: it snatches away each day as it comes, and denies us the present by promising the future." — Seneca

"A gem cannot be polished without friction, nor a man perfected without trials." — Seneca
