Hardware Buying Guide
These boards are based on an open chip design, so there are several manufacturers that make different variations of the board. As long as you can load the NodeMCU firmware onto the board, it should work with any hardware style. I've experimented with a couple different ones and here are some considerations to note for your project:
The Amica version is said to be the official spec according to Marcel Stör (who runs nodemcu-build.com) and it is a great choice if you want to use a breadboard for wiring and components.
