The GeckoLinux project is pleased to announce major updates to all editions of the Static branch, built from openSUSE Leap 15.4. This series of spins has significantly better support for new hardware thanks to the much newer kernel in openSUSE Leap 15.4. Most packages and desktop environments also have have significant new versions compared to the previous release built from openSUSE Leap 15.3. For this GeckoLinux release, permissions have been relaxed for easier printer administration without the root password. Apart from the major openSUSE updates, there are other no other major tweaks to the GeckoLinux configuration, which was already significantly improved in the previous release. GeckoLinux Static users with existing installations can simply update their systems with these simple GUI instructions.

Known issues
Unfortunately SUSE has shipped updates to the samba* packages for Leap 15.4 that break access to SMB/CIFS network shares via the GVFS system (in Nautilus, Nemo, Caja, Thunar, PCManFM, etc). GeckoLinux Static 154.220822 editions requiring that functionality have been shipped with older versions of those samba* packages, so until this bug is fixed do not update those packages.
Users of the GeckoLinux Static edition should be aware that SUSE will be replacing openSUSE Leap after version 15.5 with a radically different Linux product currently in early development as "ALP" (source). So unless something changes, current openSUSE Leap installations (and by extension GeckoLinux Static installations) will no longer be supported a few years from now. It should be noted that openSUSE Tumbleweed and GeckoLinux Rolling are not expected to undergo any fundamental changes in the near future. As an alternative to openSUSE Leap the GeckoLinux project recommends SpiralLinux, which is built directly from Debian Stable with the same conveniences and development principals as GeckoLinux Static.

For this GeckoLinux release, permissions have been relaxed for easier printer administration without the root password. Apart from the major openSUSE Tumbleweed updates included in this release, there are other no other major tweaks to the GeckoLinux configuration, which was already significantly improved in the previous release. Building on the recent 999.220105 release, GeckoLinux is pleased to announce the latest 999.220115 updated ISOs in the Rolling branch. This release is now recommended for new installations, but users of an installation from the 999.220115 release can also make some easy manual changes as described below.
Changes in GeckoLinux Rolling 999.220115
The GeckoLinux configuration for the Calamares installer has been updated to not create a Btrfs subvolume for the /tmp directory, as openSUSE Tumbleweed works best with its default configuration of /tmp in RAM. Users with GeckoLinux Rolling installations from the 999.220105 release might want to update their /etc/fstab by adding a # at the beginning of the line that contains /tmp btrfs subvol=/tmp .
An additional improvement has been added to the GeckoLinux custom low-latency PipeWire configuration to make the PulseAudio compatibility system automatically switch input/output streams to USB audio devices when they are connected. Users with GeckoLinux Rolling installations from the 999.220105 release might want to add this config file to /etc/pipewire/ .
Since the previous release, the openSUSE packages for Budgie now use a new utility for displaying desktop icons. This utility is inferior to the GeckoLinux default of using Nemo to control the desktop, which has been configured to continue working in in the 999.220115 release. Previous GeckoLinux Rolling Budgie installations can also have Nemo control the desktop by coping this config file to ~/.config/autostart/ .
The xhost package is now included by default to make Gparted load correctly in the live environment.
Some editions have improved default application associations for some common image formats.

New features in GeckoLinux Rolling 999.210105 editions
Thanks to some important improvements from the Calamares installer project, and after lots and lots of trial and error to tweak the GeckoLinux configuration, inclusion of openSUSE's famous integration of the GRUB bootloader with Btrfs and Snapper snapshots has finally arrived in GeckoLinux. This also required a major rework of the default Btrfs subvolume layout, allowing for effective snapshot rollbacks without manual manipulation of the bootloader or default subvolumes. Important note: When performing a rollback in GeckoLinux for the first time the command is slightly different from vanilla openSUSE: sudo snapper --ambit classic rollback (please see the wiki entry).
GeckoLinux ROLLING 999.220105 spins now feature the PipeWire audio framework with a customized out-of-the-box configuration suitable for casual home audio as well as professional low-latency (5.3ms) JACK applications. This PipeWire configuration allows for hassle-free workflows involving simultaneous usage of applications that are coded to work with PulseAudio and others that need JACK support, with no complicated bridging of the two systems. There is also an included systemd service to optionally put the processor governor in Performance mode on systems that need realtime low-latency audio support. To enable it, simply use the YaST Services manager to enable and start the cpupower service.
Another important improvement to all GeckoLinux editions is the addition of improved installation logic based on whether the system is running in EFI or legacy BIOS mode, leading to much better reliability during future GRUB bootloader updates.
An additional workaround has been added to avoid a bug in openSUSE's GRUB routine when generating entries for other dual-boot Linux systems on Btrfs subvolumes.
To make package downloads from the openSUSE mirror network much more reliable, repository URLs have been adjusted to use openSUSE's new mirrorcache.opensuse.org system.
To improve long-term reliability after future GRUB updates, logic has been added to the Calamares installer configuration to use Btrfs LZO compression on legacy BIOS systems, whereas Zstd compression is retained on EFI systems.
Finally, GeckoLinux welcomes the return of the ROLLING-OBS Pantheon edition now that the maintenance situation of the openSUSE repository for Pantheon packages has been resolved.

GeckoLinux is pleased to announce the 153.210608 update to its full range of STATIC and NEXT editions. These updated editions are now based on the new openSUSE Leap 15.3 release, which in turn is built from SUSE Linux Enterprise (SLE) packages. The Linux kernel is still at version 5.3.18, but additional backports are included for better compatibility with newer hardware. GeckoLinux in turn continues to refine its package selection and unique configuration to provide a simple, clean system that works out of the box. For this GeckoLinux STATIC release, the Calamares installer is now at version 3.2.36, and has been configured to use the Btrfs filesystem with LZO transparent compression by default for the guided partitioning options, although of course all other modern Linux filesystems are also available with the custom partitioning option. When Btrfs is used, the Snapper system is now pre-configured for automatic timeline and administration snapshots, which can be easily managed via the YaST Filesystem Snapshots module. Additionally, zRAM swap is enabled out of the box, and the EarlyOOM daemon is also enabled to help prevent unrecoverable system freezes in low memory situations. NTP for automatic network time updates is now configured out of the box for all editions. By majority vote, the default filesystem for the various Calamares guided installation options is now Btrfs with transparent Zstd data compression. Of course, all other modern Linux filesystems are also still supported via the custom partitioning option. Additionally, zRAM swap is enabled out of the box, and the EarlyOOM daemon is also enabled to help prevent unrecoverable system freezes in low memory situations. For users of new Ryzen hardware the xf86-video-amdgpu driver is included out-of-the-box. And there are improvements in the language installer script to make it more reliable and compatible with future package updates.
