Learn Computer Science the fun way!
The Moving Rainbow Project is a collection of Arduino-based projects used to teach students the basic concepts of Computer Science. Projects are carefully designed to be hands-on, low-cost, fast-feedback projects that will inspire students to build their own projects. We are inspired by the availability of low-cost parts that allow students to take their projects home and show their firends. Although our beginning projects focus on the use of Arduinos, breadboards and addressable LED strips to create fun projects, you will find many other projects that integrate low-cost sensors.

This project began with the observation that low-cost Arduino Nano processors (about $3 each) and low-cost LED strips ($5 each for a 60-pixel strip) were a fantastic way to allow students to learn the basic principals of computer science. Although the Arduino Blink Lab is a good starting point, the number of wires needed to hook up 5 RGB LEDs on a breadboard tested the patience of many of our students. The addressible LED strips, with just three wires, made the process of creating colorful patterns easy and fun. The focus quickly turns from small-motor skills that test the patience of students to a focus on for loops and conditional statements. Skills that can be reused across many other projects.
There are many Arduino books that are written by inspired individuals but lack a strong testing environment. We were fortunate to expose these projects to hundreds of students through the CoderDojo projects around the world. Students would come into these sessions with little background and experienced mentors would give us high-quality feedback on what worked and what didn't work. We are grateful to everyone who has help use with this testing and feedback.
Being able to control the world around us creates a wonderful feeling of empowerment. We are no longer limited to what our cellphone or laptop can do. We can program lights and motors around to obey our every command. The Moving Rainbow kits will be your guide. You will start out with a simple blink lab but quickly move to exotic colors, patterns and motion. We can even hook up sensors to change the LEDs based on what is happening in the world around us.

Moving Rainbow Addressable LED Kits
Although this guide is designed to work with a simple kit of parts you can purchase on-line for about $13, it can be used by anyone that has an Arduino and a addressable LED strip. You can find sample links to the parts on the Bill of Materials page.
Once you have become familiar with the Arduino and the LED kit you can then try your hand at using the CoderDojo Robot Kits. These labs use two simple DC motors to create a $30 collision avoidance robot.
