How to fund graduate school

This is my running list of fellowships that can help you fund your graduate school experience (particularly if you a woman/minority in computer science, or a related field).

  10. Symantec Fellowship

    Apply in years 2,3,4

    Symantec is now accepting applications for the 2017 Symantec Fellowship, offering multiple one year awards for Ph.D. students pursuing innovative research in security, cryptography, machine learning, data mining, and information security. The fellowship provides up to $20,000 USD that may be used to cover one year of the student's tuition fees and to reimburse research expenses incurred by the student. In addition, they plan to award all fellowship recipients a separate salaried internship with Symantec. The application deadline is December 2nd, 2016.

  13. Open Philanthropy Project AI Fellows Program

    The Open Philanthropy Project has opened applications for the second year of the AI Fellows Program. Highlights: Up to 5 years of PhD support with the possibility of renewal for subsequent years Annual support of $40,000 stipend, payment of tuition and fees, and $10,000 for travel, equipment, and other research expenses Applications are due by October 26, 2018 at 11:59 PM Pacific time This fellowship seeks to fully support a small group of the most promising PhD students in AI and ML who are interested in making the long-term, large-scale impacts of AI a central focus of their research. Students with pre-existing funding sources who find the mission and community of the Fellows Program appealing are welcome to apply. We are committed to fostering a culture of inclusion, and encourage individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences to apply; we especially encourage applications from qualified women and minorities.

    Please let your students know: there's still time to apply for the Snap Research 2019 Scholarship and Fellowship programs. The Scholarship program recognizes outstanding undergraduate and Master’s students, with an emphasis on diversity; while the Fellowship program recognizes outstanding doctoral students. Both programs provide the freedom and resources for students worldwide to pursue innovative ideas and to shape those ideas into tangible cutting-edge research and products. And both are intended to foster strong collaborations with Snap Research.

  14. Snap Fellowship

    Both the Snap Research Scholarship and Fellowship consist of

    • a $10,000 award prize
    • the opportunity to intern at Snap for the 2019 summer or fall

    Applications are welcome from students carrying out exceptional research in areas of computer science relevant to Snap, including Artificial Intelligence, Computational Imaging, Computer Graphics, Computer Vision, Data Mining, Data Science, Human-Computer Interaction, Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, Security, and Speech and Audio Processing, or another related field. The deadline for submitting an application is October 31st, 2018.

    In order to be considered for the 2019 Snap Research Fellowship or Scholarship, students must meet the following criteria:

    • be registered as a full-time student at a university (as an undergraduate or Master’s student for the Scholarship, and as a PhD student for the Fellowship)
    • remain an active, full-time student for the duration of the 2018-19 academic year
    • cannot have a close relative working for Snap, Inc.
