Current Location
Itinerary of route - turn by turn directions
LiveRide
Zooms the map out
Zooms the map in

Revert the map back (start again)
Balanced route - a balance between speed and loudness
Fastest route - irregardless of distance
Quietest route - the route the stays away from main roads, where possibly
Shortest route - not necessarily the fastest, but the shortest in distance.

Routing a journey

By using the map

To generate a route, simply tap the 'waypoints' of your route. A 'waypoint' is simply a point you will pass on your route. CycleStreets will generate an optimum route, based on your waypoints, later on. You can have simply have just two waypoints - your starting point and your final destination - or you can add other waypoints (for example: you may want to go to Cambridge, passing through Ely).

Once complete, press the > icon. You must be connected to the internet at this stage. The app will contact the CycleStreets server to work out the route. Once it has done this, the map will be updated with the route. To view turn-by-turn directions of the route, press .

By using place names

First load up your Android's option menu. Then select 'Plan a route.

The default starting point is your 'Current Location'. To change this, simply type a location in the box. Alternatively you can press the contacts icon to select someone from your contacts list.

You then must enter a destination. If you wish this to be your Current Location or someone from your contacts list.

To add more waypoints, click 'add waypoint'. This will allow you to specify points for your route to go via. (for example: start - Current Location. waypoint - Ely. destination - Cambridge).

The icons below are shown, you must select one of them to decide how you want it to route the journey.

Opening specific route

To open a known bicycle route, simply load up the Android options menu then press 'Open route by number', enter the route number and select a routing option (explained below).

Loading previous routes

Load up the Android options menu then press 'Saved Routes'. Here you will see your most recent routes. Tap one of them to load it onto the map.

How can I start a new route?

To scrap the current route, all you have to do is press icon.

Using your current location

To locate yourself, press the . A yellow man will appear where you are currently located. If you want to use this as a waypoint, simply tap the yellow man.

Go to a specific place

If you want to go straight to a specific place but not necessarily route to there, you can do so by pressing the Android options menu, selecting 'More...' then pressing 'Find place'. If you press the Contacts icon you can select a contact from your address book, otherwise you can simply enter the place name.

How can I switch my location off?

If you want to switch your location off, load up the Android options menu, then press the button that says 'Location Off' - note, you may need to click 'More...' first.

Points of Interest

With Points of Interest, you can have specific types of places superimposed on your map. Examples include: parks, museums, pubs, police stations, recycling points and more. To control what appears on your map, press the Android options menu then select 'Points of Interest'. Tap on all the types of places that you want appearing on the map then press 'OK'. You will now see these places superimposed on the map.

LiveRide

What is LiveRide?

LiveRide tracks your location on a map and moves as you move, allowing you to easily navigate to where you want to go. It displays real-time information regarding your speed.

Using it

To activate it, after you've generated a route, click the image in the bottom left that looks like this:

You can also load LiveRide by pressing the Android options menu then selecting 'Start LiveRide'.

Quitting it

To leave 'LiveRide', simply press your Android's standard "back" button.

PhotoMap

PhotoMap can be launched by pressing . This will bring up a map. If there are any photos available for where you are, you will see them on the map. These are photos uploaded by members of the general public of any cycling-related incident that may be on your route.

Photo upload

You can contribute to PhotoMap by pressing . This will allow you to upload/take a photo of any cycling-related problems or good practice. Once uploaded, these will appear on the CycleStreets website and be used so that we can report problems to decision makers.

Settings

  • Route type default - specify the default method of routing; fastest, shortest, quickest or balanced.
  • Cycling speed - here you can specify the speed at which you cycle. This will affect the journey times given by the app.
  • Units - choose between Imperial and Metric units
  • Map style - choose the style of maps that appear within the app. A purely cosmetic setting.
  • Icon size - specify how large the icons (for points of interest) appear when superimposed on the map.
  • Confirm start new route - turn off/on the confirmation that appears before a new route is calculated.
  • Show blog update notification - turn off/on notifications about new blog posts.
  • Account details - here you can login to your account or register a CycleStreets account. Once logged in you will be able to upload photos to PhotoMap.
  • Photo upload - here you can choose the quality of the photographers you share with CycleStreets. 'Full size' is the largest and slowest. 'Always resize to 640 pixels' will upload quickest but the quality will be worse.
