Update Chicago Manual of Style definitions to the 18th edition. These are the key areas of focus from What’s New in the 18th Edition:

  • 13.23, 13.107. Up to six authors are now listed in a bibliography or reference list entry; if more than six, only the first three are listed, followed by “et al.” In a shortened note or an author-date text citation, up to two authors are now listed; if more than two, only the first is listed, followed by “et al.”
  • 13.26. A month or season can now usually be omitted in citations of journal articles.
  • 13.72, 13.113. Chicago now prefers repeating the name of the author(s) rather than using a 3-em dash to stand in for repeated names in bibliographies or reference lists.
  • 14.8. The page range for a cited chapter in an edited book is no longer required in a bibliography or reference list entry (though a page range is still required for most journal articles).
  • 14.30. A place of publication is no longer required in citations of books. (The CSL implementation is not complete, since for books published after 1900, the place of publication only is to be provided, but there is no way to test this in CSL 1.0.2.)
  • 14.89. Author-date reference list entries that include a month and day (as for a newspaper article) do not need to repeat the year with the month and day.
  • 14.75, 14.76. Updated and expanded guidance on citing ahead-of-print and forthcoming journal articles as well as preprints.
  • 14.157. Updated and expanded guidance on citing databases and datasets.

Closes #7389.

Other enhancements:

The macros are reordered to implement consistently the organizational scheme of providing macros in their order of occurrence in the citations and bibliography, with dependent macros placed above the macro that first refers to them. Affixes are replaced with delimiters wherever possible.

The author–date style now uses the full-note style as a template, resolving a number of inconsistencies in behaviour between the two. In the full-note style, the -note macros consistently follow the same structure as their counterparts for the bibliography.

Awesome! You just created a pull request to the Citation Styles Language styles repository. One of our human volunteers will try to get in touch soon (usually within a week). In the meantime, I will run some automated checks. You should be notified of the results in a few minutes.

If you haven't done so yet, please make sure your style validates and follows all our other Style Requirements.

To update this pull request, visit the "Files changed" tab above, click on the ellipsis button in the top-right corner of your style, and then select "Edit file" to start editing:

If you have any questions, please leave a comment and we'll get back to you. While we usually respond in English, feel free to write in whatever language you're most comfortable.

How should we deal with the guidance in 14.72 to include the name of a source database? A macro such as this (along the lines of what @bwiernik suggested on the Zotero forums) would achieve it (excluding book and chapter to avoid printing the names of library catalogues):

  <macro name="DOI-URL">
    <choose>
      <if match="none" type="legal_case">
        <choose>
          <if variable="DOI">
            <text prefix="https://doi.org/" variable="DOI"/>
          </if>
          <else-if variable="URL">
            <text variable="URL"/>
          </else-if>
          <else-if match="none" type="book chapter">
            <text variable="source"/>
          </else-if>
        </choose>
      </if>
    </choose>
  </macro>

The problem is Zotero's default behaviour of excluding URLs of articles with page numbers from the data passed to citeproc. Because there is no way to determine whether the URL is really there, this will result in Zotero users receiving 'JSTOR' and similar appended to citations (there are lots of articles on JSTOR without DOIs, e.g. https://jstor.org/stable/41829335). If nobody can think of a way to work around this, are we to code according to the CSL specification or for default Zotero behaviour?

In an ideal world, could we get Zotero to change this behaviour in the next version? We could produce an alternative version of the style without URIs for users who do not want these, though I am loath to introduce more variants.

I think it's a possibility to get Zotero to change the behavior (we've discussed it before and I think there's an issue open for it in this repo).

The thing we need to do first is to update at least major styles like Vancouver to expect the URL to be there and to omit it for paper articles as needed.

Although, could you describe exactly what the Chicago guidance is? What exactly is the database they refer to? In APA, I assume that more limited databases are stored in archive.

This is the relevant text from 14.72:

Sometimes a URL for a source consulted in a subscription database (as through a library) will be very long or otherwise unsuitable. In such cases, it may be preferable to list the name of the database rather than a URL (see also 13.10).

Hebert, B. T. “The Island of Bolsö: A Study of Norwegian Life.” Sociological Review 17, no. 4 (1925): 307–13. EBSCOhost.

Zotero imports 'EBSCOhost' into the Library Catalogue field, which maps to source. I don't think many people will want this in practice: as a case in point, including the database name in their example is useless, because the paper doesn't exist on EBSCOhost any longer (it's instead at https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1467-954X.1925.tb01552.x).

That said, the advantage of using archive for this would be to allow users to include this information if desired without including common database names by default under Zotero's current behaviour. Alongside APA, I see that this also works in MLA.

See ¶ 14.72. While `source` might be the obvious field to print for this (since Zotero imports the names of library catalogues here), this would result in the names of databases appearing after many entries for Zotero users where they are not desired, since it excludes URLs from the citation data by default with page numbers. The suggestion of @bwiernik to use `archive` follows the CSL styles for APA and MLA.

@adam3smith, @bwiernik, and anyone else reading – this is now ready for testing. You may find it easier to see how the various styles relate to the full-note version from the diff files that I used to generate them, which you can find at https://github.com/adunning/csl-builder.

To fix the test errors, I programatically removed all unused macros. This is less confusing for users who are editing the styles further, but it also makes it more difficult to see the differences between the various versions.

Should there be any new derivatives? For example, the place of publication and the three-em dash for subsequent bibliography items are still technically allowed. My own tendency is to wait and see what users request.
