The monkey patch should no longer be necessary now that net-http-persistent supports NO_PROXY. See: drbrain/net-http-persistent#31

I tried out this patch, but it seems capybara (with mechanize) no longer honours my NO_PROXY environment variable setting. Requests sent directly via Net::HTTP seems to be unaffected.

Am not fully sure why yet, but would wish to investigate further before committing this request.
