Home Assistant Tab: Home

Purpose

This is the at-a-glance-screen for our Home Assistant. With it, we want key information and nothing else. To that end, it's made up of a few key cards:

  • People
  • Valuables
  • Security Status
  • Modes
  • Climate

People

Purpose:

With this card, we can quickly see where family members are. Two key features of these sensors:

  • We utilize a more comprehensive set of presence values (special thanks to Phil Hawthorne for the idea). In addition to the key values (Home, Just Arrived, Just Left, Away, and Extended Away), the sensors will show configured zones by name if we happen to be in them.
  • The icon changes to a monochromatic version if the person isn't Just Arrived or Home.

Valuables

Purpose:

With this card, we get a quick view of where valuables are (home or away).

Relevant Items:

Security Status

Purpose:

With this card, we get:

  • a quick overview of whether the house is secure overall (i.e., are all of the "secure items" in their secure state – are doors locked, is the garage door down, etc.)
  • quick access to various scenes that lock up, open up, etc.

Relevant Items:

Modes

Purpose:

In this card, we control several "modes" that our house can be in:

  • Do Not Disturb: silences all notifications, regardless of their type
  • Guest Mode: disables some automations that might be too much for our guests to handle
  • Vacation Mode: takes care of various functions while we're on vacation (e.g., randomly cycling lights to make it appear as though we're home)

Relevant Items:

Climate

Purpose:

With this card, we can see:

  • Average temperature throughout the house
  • Average humidity throughout the house
  • Whether our Nest is in away mode or not (especially useful when we want to turn off away mode to heat/cool the house well before we get home)
