handle non-zero exit codes, newlines, empty strings in stdout #513

Allow commands that return a non-zero exit code to be either hidden or shown with a color scheme indicating failure. Additionally, allow the user to specify that empty or all-whitespace output strings should hide the segment rather than inserting an empty segment.

This also fixes the issue where output strings with newlines could mess up the prompt by putting newline segments in between lines. Also handle the case where no command is provided.
