Biomechanical model (left above) demonstrating how one of 5 sectors of the tongue body may be controlled by contraction of Genioglossus neuromuscular compartment (NMC), Verticalis NMC and Transversus NMC without requiring the action of any other muscle. Ultrasound of coronal section of the tongue showing grooving and doming. Probe was hand held vertically midway between mandible and hyoid to capture a mid sector of the tongue.
