The Virtual Device Server is a server that handles dedicated output channels. It allows the user to define a channel with an input and/or output slot, and unique name and ID. The user may then call on existing channels by name and/or ID. It also allows the user to specify minimum and maximum values for the channel, as well as scale and offset factors.

This is most useful for permanent or semi-permanent experimental setups where a particular channel is unlikely to change purpose. In such a situation the VDS provides convenience, and removes one avenue of human error, as the purpose of a channel is more evident when it is referred to by a name that describes its purpose.
