## Who am I

+>I am who I am(我就是我)

My name is Yini He(何旖旎).
I’m a PhD student with a major in neuroimaging at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC).
It is truly amazing for me to study in the WhitakerLab at the Alan Turing Institute as a visiting student, jointly funded by the Chinese Scholarship Council (CSC) and the Newton Fund.
I am enthusiastic about the relationship between individual traits, the brain and emotions, and particularly the associated risks of developing mental disorders.

## Where I come from

+>As different as night and day(冰火两重天)

I was born in Changsha city in China, which is famous for the spicy dishes and excessively distinct seasons.
Then I moved to Haikou, which is famous for the gentlest sea wind and spring-like seasons.
As its title indicates, these two cities have extreme differences, just like a song changing from a gentle and poetic melody to passionate and fiery bursts, fully influencing the two sides of my personality.
I am happy and passionate at work, and at the same time I enjoy a totally peaceful and quiet life when I'm not working.

## What are my hobbies?

+>The more National, the more International.(民族的就是世界的)

I love travelling around the world.
The coexistence of classic culture with the modernity and prosperity of London attracts me incredibly.
The people here are gentle and full of artistic temperament.
Modern and beautiful Vancouver attracts me just as much.
The people there understand the beauty of cultural integration.
Da Nang beckons to me with its mysteriousness and simplicity.
The people there are warm and kind.

At the same time, I am interested in all kinds of traditional Chinese culture, with its food, traditional clothing, calligaraphy, tea and Guqin(an ancient instrument of China). With a history of 5000 years, China has preserved its ancient philosophy and beautiful civilization. I am fascinated by the merging of Chinese and western cultures. I used to play the ukelele wearing Qipao(a traditional dress of China). I also tried cooking a Chinese meal with fish and chips.

## Life and work goals

+>Ideal comes from life(理想源于生活)

My university major is psychology.
In my senior year, I decided to go to a special school and work as an intern teacher there.
The students at this school had mental health differences.
This was the first time that I truly understood the importance of mental health at heart.
I loved those children. Many of them had great artistic talents.
Some of them had attractive and friendly dispositions, and were willing to be best friends with me.
At the same time I was distressed to think that they could face social difficulties and social burdens.
Ever since then, I’ve always thought about these teenagers and hoped that they could have a better life with the help of medical and therapeutic advancements for mental health.

## My research experience

+Look at the fun of work, so we have fun every day(快乐生活,快乐工作)

Ever since my experience as an intern at the school for special children, I have been concerned about susceptibility to mental health disorders.
My major was modified to Neuroimaging.
The brilliance of how the brain works totally amazed me.
I became very interested in regions of the brain and the connectivity and the fiber bundle of the brain where the source for the link between human behavior and emotion could be found and studied.

I really appreciate that I have a great supervisor who is Tianzi Jiang.
He is always rigorous and enthusiastic about Neuroscience.
I have to say from the heart, that he is one of the best role models of mine.

Now I have come to the Turing Institute, I am pleasantly surprised.
I love Kirstie’s energy and she always gives support to me.
She told me that I should do what I am most interested in.
I hope to learn from her how to do the most convincing research.
I also hope to learn from her passion to try to change the world.

So lucky I am to have a great experience studying in the Alan Turing Institue.
I feel happy to know many people here, and all of them are zealous, creative and willing to help others.
Now, I would like to introduce 3 people who I interviewed them. I love their great works.

## Ryan Chan

Ryan is a first-year doctoral student at the Alan Turing Institute and Warwick.
His smile carries a very powerful energy.
He loved and studied mathematics at the University of Leeds, where he developed a keen interest in Bayesian theory and computational statistics.
His current research interest is broadly concerned with addressing practical constraints of common Monte Carlo algorithms.
In particular, Ryan’s research focuses on Monte Carlo Fusion, which aims to tackle the problem of unifying distributed analyses and inferences from multiple sources on shared parameters, into a single coherent inference.
The applications include expert elicitation, differential privacy, and inference in big data settings.
Ryan will be focusing on algorithms for inference in big data settings for the next few years.

## Georgia Aitkenhead

Georgia graduated from Cambridge university and She used to work for government.

Now,She is currently working with Kirstie to design and build a citizen science platform(I think that is a great program).

Now, she is currently working with Kirstie to design and build a citizen science platform, which I think is a great program.

This will be used to investigate sensory processing and navigating environments, but it can also be adapted to answer other research questions.
She is co-designing an ethical framework to go along with the platform, based on methods of participatory science.
Her research interests also include open source working and building a fine-grained consent model, as well as the psychology of interactions with technology, for example how to share data online.
Georgia told me that she is really enjoying her research,
, because it’s amazing to have this opportunity to immerse herself in the Turing’s collective expertise.
There are lots of avenues of growth which are possible from for current work, including developing skills in open source, programming languages, and the philosophy of technology/ethics.
She also told me some impressive experiences in Turing! (It is also impressive making friends with Georgia!)
In the field of autism research, there has been a shift in the way that autism is spoken about and analyzed and understood.

One example of this is a movement away from the trope of ‘defect’ to one of autistic pride, accomplishment, and the value of neurodiversity.

She has been taking part in amazing research about a genetic variant protects against obesity, type 2 diabetes.

This gene is called the MC4R.It could protect people from being overweight.
MC4R could act as a "switch" in the brain that tells us not to eat after a meal.
Meanwhile, mutations in the MC4R gene, which is associated with a higher risk of obesity, can cause MC4R to stop working.
The research has been watched by drug companies who believe the genetic variation could help people achieve or maintain weight loss.
Chen said she loves working at Turing. She is very excited to get access to a lot of the latest knowledge of artificial intelligence here.
