The commonest use of coordinate variables is to locate the data in space and time, but coordinates may be provided for any other continuous geophysical quantity (e.g. density, temperature, radiation wavelength, zenith angle of radiance, sea surface wave frequency)
And later in that document regarding feature types:
The space-time coordinates that are indicated for each feature are mandatory. However a featureType may also include other space-time coordinates which are not mandatory (notably the z coordinate).
My reading of this is that we could add other space-time coordinates for our burst-like data (e.g., sample, frequency) and be consistent with CF-1.7. Note that this text is not in the CF-1.6 document.
