Revival of #16757.
I know this was originally rejected, but given the arguably expanded scope of visual customization in #25537, I feel like it might be a good time to revisit this, but I don't mind at all if this doesn't get merged :^)
This is not just a rebase of the original PR, as I've fixed a few bugs in the original implementation, and somewhat modified the event handling approach in the process.
