How to track your map runs

Quentin Devauchelle edited this page Nov 10, 2023 · 7 revisions

Exile Diary tracks runs automatically by reading your Path of Exile logs.

Setup

1 - Set Client.txt Path in the Settings

Path of exile saves logs into a Client.txt file, in its logs folder. Make sure to enter the full path to this file into the Settings page of Exile Diary.

The Path should look like this : C:\some\folder\Path of Exile\logs\Client.txt

2 - Enable Local Chat ingame

You also need to make sure Path of Exile's Local chat is enabled. This is what Exile Diary uses to read every event (which map you entered, if you met any league mechanic, etc...)

To enable it, look for the Local button on top of your chat window in Path of Exile.

Tracking runs

The app will automatically start tracking when you enter a new Run area (a new map, the Delve mine, a new story map,...).

By default, it will track the time it takes, as well as the loot you got, based on your inventory whenever you go back to town.

To finish tracking a run, you need to :

  • Enter a new Run area OR
  • Send yourself a private message saying end (The command would look like: @myCoolCharacterName end).

Optional: Tracking Map Tier/IIR/IIQ

To track more stats, Exile Diary can be setup to read these from a screenshot.

Setup

To set it up, you need to enter your Path of Exile screenshots folder in the Settings page.

The default location is C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\Documents\My Games\Path of Exile\Screenshots

Usage

To read these stats follow these steps:

  1. After entering the area, switch the minimap to fullscreen mode (press Tab and make sure the minimap does not show on the top right of your screen and the map mods are listed there instead)

  2. Move around until the area name and monster level are on as much of a clear dark background as you can, example below. (See tips for taking a good screenshot)

  1. Take a screenshot (default hotkey in the tool: CTRL+F8) for Exile Diary to extract the area info and mod list from.

The overlay will list the stats it read from the screenshot. If it did not catch any of the stats (IIR/IIQ/Map Tier) correctly, feel free to take another screenshot. It is using character recognition, it can be weird sometimes.

Optional: Tracking Kill count

Exile Diary can log the kill count of your map runs, as long as there are active incubators on your equipment.

This is done automatically, the only action needed on your part is to have at least one active incubator at all times. If your last incubator hatches during a map run, the kill count for that map will be lost-- you can portal out before this happens and activate a new incubator to keep it going

Common errors

Double Client.txt

Sometimes, the app will add another \Client.txt at the end of your Client.txt path, basically making it look like C:\Some\Path\Client.txt\Client.txt. Make sure you remove the last one (\Client.txt), leaving the path looking like C:\Some\Path\Client.txt

Local Chat disabled

If your local chat is disabled, the app will not be able to read the name of the map you enter. The Overlay will say that it is tracking an Unknown area. You can fix it by enabling Local Chat. You can then restart the same run by teleporting to another Run Area (The mine, or a story map), and then back to your hideout and then to that same area.

Unsupported Language

Exile Diary reads a lot of events from the messages in your chat logs. If your game is not in English, it will not be able to read the events properly. The app will say "Tracking unknown" when entering a new Run area.

Expected integer for height but received -24 of type number

This error will happen when the screenshot failed to detect the beginning and the end of the mods.

Make sure the game is not in a resolution that leaves black bars on the side of the game, which would trick the detection, and try to follow these tips for taking a good screenshot.

Tips

Taking a good screenshot

  • Zooming in (by scrolling the mousewheel forward) can help.
  • It's best to take the screenshot right after entering the map, but if it's not safe (monsters in sight, for instance) any time before you leave the area is OK.
  • The background doesn't have to be completely black, as long as the area name and level are readable.
  • Some samples of "good enough" screenshots:
