Welcome to the bib wiki!
For my reasons for hosting my BibTeX file in a publiclly available Git repostitory see this blog post .
Some guidelines I have tried to adhered to:
- I have aimed for completeness. So, for example, subtitles are included as well as the main title. Completeness is sought inso far as they are compatible with other guidelines, such as the following one governing names.
- An author’s representation of their names is to be respected. So, for example, “A.J. Ayer” is preferred over “Alfred Jules Ayer” and “M.G.F. Martin” is to be preferred over “Mike Martin”.
- I have ignored elements irrelevant to academic publishing, such as ISBN numbers.
- I aim, however, to include DOI numbers. These should be included in academic bibliographies as they form the basis of persistent links to online versions of the material. For more information on DOI numbers and academic publishing, see here, here, and here.
- I aim for normalization of repeated elements. So, for example, names to be always be represented the same way.
- A special case of this is cite keys. I have a preference that these take the following form: “Author:yearxy” where “x” and “y” can be any alphabetic character.
The present BibTeX file only imperfectly lives up to these guidelines since BibTeX files produced by other authors have been merged. However, I will continue to edit the file as I go along.
For those unfamiliar with Git but are willing to give it a go, Scott Chacon has assembled a site aggregating Git resources here. For uses of Git in an academic setting see my blog posts.
