This page is aimed at defining a ubiquitous language for the project, in order to have a clear alignment between the business of managing volunteers in a crisis and the software project.

The goal of the Humanitarian Toolbox app is to coordinate the communication and tracking of volunteers at a disaster location.

Roles:

  • Volunteer: Someone that helps at one or more disaster events.
  • Cluster Coordinator: The person managing a cluster at one disaster event. The primary role of Cluster coordination is to ensure that humanitarian assistance programmes in any one geographic or thematic area of work do not conflict, overlap with, or result in major gaps in service delivery.
  • Humanitarian Coordinator: The person that manages all clusters at one disaster event.
  • System Administrator: someone from Humanitarian Toolbox that provides support.

Concepts:

  • Disaster: A disaster is a sudden, calamitous event that seriously disrupts the functioning of a community or society and causes human, material, and economic or environmental losses that exceed the community’s or society’s ability to cope using its own resources.
  • Volunteer Commitment: A commitment made by a volunteer to be available for a particular disaster in the specified commitment time period.
  • Clusters: An area of expertise defined by the UN under which humanitarian efforts at each disaster are managed. The list of clusters is managed by the UN, and will change or update very infrequently, if at all. Volunteers register under their area of expertise by cluster.
