Fold is an application to help design and create origami crease patterns. This application has several different tools built into it to help with the process of developing origami.
When creating a crease pattern, you start with a blank sheet of paper which defaults to a unitless square sheet of paper. You can change the units of you sheet of paper at any time. With your blank paper, you can use the axioms of origami to help create new creases into the paper. The application helps you create these creases by giving you previews of possible folds from selected reference objects like edges or vertices on the page. You can toggle different axioms on and off depending on which creases you are trying to create.
- Axiom 1: Crease an edge between two points
- Axiom 2: Create a crease that bisects two points
- Axiom 3: Bisect two lines
When developing more complex origami patterns, you will need to find a way to create a reference point at an arbitrary position on the paper. Instead of trying to figure out a way to approximate it yourself, this tool can help by giving multiple different solutions. These solutions will have various numbers of folds and accuracies to the desired point. Different fold sequences may have more or less overlap with your intended folds so you can share some of the initial sequences and shorten the length of your pattern. Sometimes you may need much more accuracy for your reference vertex. In that case, you may wish choose to pick a fold sequence that is a bit longer but more precise.
The reference finder provides you with all the steps that you need to fold to the reference finder. It gives you a step by step visualization of what it takes to find the reference point.
