Goals

The Hippocratic Copyleft Working Group (HCWG) is a volunteer-run group whose goal is to create a copyleft version of the Hippocratic license (HL). This group is one part of the broader Ethical Source Movement.

Licenses such as the General Public License (GPL), Affero General Public License (AGPL) and the Lesser General Public License (LGPL) are part of the copyleft licencing based approach of assuring continued public ownership of software by enforcing sharing.

This is in distinction to the so-called permissive licenses which permit privatisation via relicensing. The HL is derived from a permissive license. We do not dismiss the usefulness and value of the current HL but instead build upon the innovation by working towards a copyleft version.

Membership is open. Feel welcome to apply.
