###Community Health Explorer Features

  • Responsive, built to function on mobile devices as well as desktop (a challenge for most chart-based applications)*

  • Allows easy updates of chart text and data without re-uploading data *

  • Extensible: add new charts without OIT help, added automatically to application*

  • Sustainable cost: we host data & application in City's Github account (free for open source applications)*

  • Accessible: charting library chosen for accessibility features; generates hidden data table to allow screen readers to describe data normally hidden in image-based charts*

  • No desktop application to download; not subject to changes in terms from vendor (remove free plan, change their data hosting terms, etc)*

  • Securely accessible to update from anywhere on the web, site refreshes data automatically

  • Versioning of data: can be rolled back if needed, or bulk upload refreshed data in same format (via OIT)*

  • Deep linking: each Category and Indicator heading is available as a link that can be used to link directly to that chart on the page; useful for citations or sharing on social media.

  • Fully open source, which means another city could reuse the code to build their own explorer

*not available in previous version using Tableau
