title: 'Real Materials in Action: studying structure on different length and timescales'
type: award
2403sb_neworleans,la:
abstract: The atomic pair distribution function (PDF) analysis of x-ray diffraction
data has been used to study the structure of liquids since its invention in the
1930's. However, due to structural averaging, the amount of information we can
glean about the liquid structure can be quite limited. Recently, improvements
in x-ray sources and in algorithms and software for data reduction and analysis
have helped us to obtain new information that wasn't accessible before. In this
talk I will discuss recent PDF studies of structured liquids including molten
MOFs and extended molecular structures forming in organic-water mixtures. These
have allowed us to directly test theories for the famous upper critical solution
temperature (UCST) phenomenon that were postulated also in the 1930's, but never
experimentally proved. The liquid mixtures studied are amines with water and
the results have implications for water purification, mineral recovery from seawater
all the way to possible biological applications.
