Sound Quality Format
Normal mp4 or m4a
High mp4 or m4a
HiFi mp4 or m4a or flac
Master (BEST) flac

Convert mp4 to m4a failed?
Install ffmpeg. (google by yourself)

Set quality=Master , but download mp4/m4a?
Not everything is in flac format.

Set quality=HiFi , but download mp4/m4a?
It depends on the token, If you have or find a good token, you can modify file(https://github.com/yaronzz/Tidal-Media-Downloader/blob/master/Else/tokens.json), and pull request.

Can't download master?
Set accessToken (settings). how to get accesstoken

Is there any reason in particular for why lossless will no longer be downloaded in FLAC?

Correct me if I'm wrong - but won't HI-RES just download in normal FLAC if a HI-RES file is not available? That's how I've been using the program - and it's never been an issue for me.

How would I go about finding one, or finding out whether or not the one which I assume is associated with my Tidal client is suitable? Appreciate the reply.

Can you please elaborate on this change and how and why the behavior was changed? I use the HiFi option in Tidal which was corresponding to the Lossless option within the application earlier and resulted in a clean FLAC file. Now the Lossless option only downloads an MP4 file which cannot even be played by my audio appllication (reports corrupted) and the Hi-Res option downloads the MQA file (which I would like to avoid) and it does not even result in the intended Master sample rate (88.2kHz for the example track) but rather always in 44.1kHz. Is there any resampling going on within the application? This severely lowers the usability of the app for me. Thanks.

same problem as with me. I can download a maximum of 48khz / 24bit, although the source file is a 96khz / 24bit.

What device are you using? Is it a a fully compatible MQA device? Unless it is - MQA will show as 48/24.

sorry my mistake. the chord mojo supports higher sampling rates but no mqa -.- if i soon bought the ibasso dx220, it should be able to unfold the mqa files. will then test that

My bad, the sample rate difference was due to the software decoding of MQA within Tidal. Nonetheless, where has the option to download a plain FLAC file gone?

If only MQA is available for the file (albums/tracks with M beside them) - then that is all you will be able to get.

However, with a regular FLAC album that has no M beside it, choosing to download it with the HI-RES option still checked will download the plain FLAC file you are looking for.

Thanks for the reply. I was previously able to download the FLAC files using the "Lossless" download option in the app even for albums that were available in MQA. I am looking for this option. I am not interested in MQA files.

For me, I have always had to look for a version of the album that was not MQA. This program is only going to download what is available from the server, and from the URL you're telling it to point to.

The album in question is only available in MQA.

I know but in the earlier version I was able to download the FLAC file even though the link was to an MQA-ready album. After all, the MQA file is different from the FLAC file and both are available for playback on Tidal (if I am not misunderstanding the quality toggle in Tidal). I am not able to download these anymore, though. Attaching screenshot of an MQA album downloaded with an earlier version of the app. Note that the resulting files are not MQA.

(edit: I am sure because there is only one instance of the album, which is MQA ready as seen on the screenshot)

I see.

From what can tell, when downloading the same track you used as an example with the Lossless option on, it downloads as an ALAC file - which, I believe i saw yaronzzz say was the only way the current version of the program can work. ALAC is still lossless - can be converted to FLAC as well, as it's a lossless-lossless process.

louckazdenekjr commented May 31, 2020

Thanks! You're right. It is an ALAC in an M4A container, which works just fine. Maybe my issue is specific to certain albums, then. This was just a quick example but the actual issue I've been facing is with this one.

(edit: also why was I able to download it in FLAC previously and now it downloads it in M4A/ALAC? Curious.)

https://tidal.com/browse/album/125430178

Can you please try downloading this one in Lossless and let me know if it works for you?

It is a workaround that was explained in another thread - the only way the program will able to function at the moment.

No - this one comes up with an unsupported file format for me when downloading in lossless and trying to play in foobar! Maybe this is an example of only the MQA file being available?

Same for me. Also using foobar btw :) it works in VLC player though and I am sure previously it would've just worked and downloaded a normal FLAC file. It must be related to the workaround. I will see if I will be able to convert it somehow.

Thank you so much for all your help.

(edit: for anyone interested, converting the files to WAV via VLC Player serves as a temporary workaround, although it messes up the metadata a bit)

Why not just convert directly from MP4 (ALAC) to FLAC ?
This could be easily achieved with a tool such as fre:ac: https://www.freac.org/downloads-mainmenu-33

And then an open question to the developers:

It seems that everything is now downloaded in ALAC instead of FLAC. Do you have some idea when this can be fixed, if at all?

The MP4 audio stream is corrupted and needs to be re-encoded.

Use Charles ,But it is too complicated, if you are not a developer, don't try.

Yeah, a big thank you to @yaronzz and any other devs on tidal-dl for so actively maintaining and troubleshooting any issues! :)
I really hope the new token will keep working for a long while, allowing you to instead spend any time you have for this project on making feature improvements to the application instead :)
