Scripts include single "-" for pidfile and daemon, but it's double --
start_daemon -p "$PIDFILE" $exec -pidfile" $PIDFILE" -daemon $MESSAGE_SWITCH_OPTION
should be
start_daemon -p "$PIDFILE" $exec --pidfile "$PIDFILE" --daemon $MESSAGE_SWITCH_OPTION
