the video is inverted in both horizontal and vertical direction with respect to the properly oriented original at PMC.

First time I see this.

I checked the original at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4057317/bin/pone.0099936.s004.avi – mplayer plays it inverted in both horizontal and vertical direction, totem plays it correctly.
