How does "Automatic" customization sync (should) work?

I don't get it, how I get the automatic customization sync to work.

For testing purposes I have synced two devices with my CouchDB. I ignored all configuratin syncs, despite exactly one: the appearance.json. On one device I toggled between the light and dark theme and expected somehow, that this change will be synced to my other device. But nothing happens.

I tried "Overwrite Remote", "Overwrite Local" and "Use newer" in all kinds of combinations of both devices. I have restarted the Obsidians on both devices. I have checked the sync logs. Everythin I tried does not apply the change on the theme from one device to the other.

When I do a "Selective" sync, the theme change at the appearance.json gets applied. Just to prove that the sync itself would work.

So how is the automatic customization sync meant to work?
