select2 popup disappearing in chrome, not in firefox

In Chrome, if we click inside the input field of a select2 widget, then the popup disappears unless you click right above that tiny 10px wide invisible input field on the left side.
Curiously, the dropdown menu with the options stays visible.
This behaviour can be seen on the demo page as well:

No problem in firefox.
Can anyone help resolve this?
