## The First Steps on the Server

Open a terminal and connect to the VPS:

```
ssh root@<your IP address>
```

Set your hostname by changing the `"your hostname"` with another name, verify that it works and reconnect to the VPS on Linode:

```
echo "your hostname" > /etc/hostname
hostname -F /etc/hostname
hostname
```

Open the hosts file and set the fully qualified domain name (FQDN):

```
nano /etc/hosts
```

Include the following line and save (Ctrl + X) the file:

```
127.0.0.1 <your hostname>.<yourdomain.com> <yourhostname>
```

Set the language and time zone:

```
locale-gen en_US.UTF-8
update-locale LANG=en_US.UTF-8
dpkg-reconfigure tzdata
date
```
