Description

We should change the default branch to main.

This has now been the default on both git and GitHub for several years.

Benefits of this work

  • makes the repo look like most other software projects in the year 2025

Acceptance criteria

  • default branch is main
  • there is no branch called master
  • all links in the repo referencing the repo point to branches that exist

Then a PR updating references.
