audio volume with mobile Safari

It is not even possible to influence the audio volume with a IOS 14.4 Safari browser. Moving over the area displays the volume, but the sound is still output when you move beyond the action radius.

ios safari seems to ignore the volume on the audio element. Possible workarounds might be just muting on volume 0 or using the web audio api.
