Error python/pip error when installing ESP32 tools

In the ESP32 tools installation step of the README, I get the following error:

Here are my pip and python versions:

pip 20.2.3 from /usr/local/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/pip (python 2.7)
~/toitlang/toit$ python --version
Python 2.7.18

What am I missing?

ESP IDF uses python3. Install the necessary python dependencies:

sudo apt-get -y install python3 python3-pip python-is-python3

I got it working on my mac by creating an alias so that it uses python3 instead of the default python version 2.7.
alias python='python3'
