Plugin manager not working

Following the guide to install tmux plugin manager I was left with a tmate session that hung on exec and would not launch and connect as usual: https://github.com/tmux-plugins/tpm

Hazarding a guess I suspect this might be due to tmate now being behind tmux in releases? Or hardcoded references in the plugin manager meaning a fork of the plugin manager could be required?

I've no experience with this codebase but if the fix is minor please give me some gentle guidance below and I'm happy to raise a pull request. Alternatively, I'm happy to test an early release build that someone else pushes.

See #60. The issue is known since 2015, but unfortunately there seems to be no fix/workaround other then commenting out the run '~/.tmux/plugins/tpm/tpm' line in your config.
